Technical data
The Porsche 912, a sports car manufactured by Porsche AG of Stuttgart, Germany, was produced between 1965 and 1969. In the early 1960s, Porsche faced the dilemma of discontinuing the Type 356, leaving the newly introduced Type 911 as its sole product. Concerned about potential sales decline due to the significant price difference between the 911 and the 356, Porsche executives decided in 1963 to introduce a new entry-level model based on the 911 but powered by a four-cylinder engine.
The 912 utilized a 911 chassis/bodyshell paired with a 1.6L, four-cylinder, push-rod Type 616/36 engine, derived from the Type 616/16 engine used in the 1964–1965 Type 356SC. Despite a slightly lower compression ratio and new Solex carburetors resulting in a five-horsepower reduction compared to the 616/16 engine, the Type 616/36 engine delivered similar maximum torque at lower rpm, making it appealing to both new and existing customers.
The 912 quickly gained popularity due to its styling, performance, quality construction, reliability, and affordability, outselling the 911 in its initial years of production. Porsche manufactured nearly 30,000 912 coupé units and around 2500 912 Targa body style units during its five-year production span.
The 4-cylinder 914 replaced the 912 for the model years 1970 through 1975.
