964 (1988-1994)

Technical data
The Porsche 964, produced from 1989 to 1994, marks a significant evolution in the Porsche 911 sports car series. It introduced Porsche's Tiptronic automatic transmission and optional all-wheel drive, setting a new standard in performance and versatility. Compared to its predecessor, the Carrera 3.2, the 964 was extensively revamped, with approximately 85% of its components being new. The initial 1989 lineup featured the all-wheel-drive "Carrera 4" models, followed by the rear-wheel-drive "Carrera 2" variant in 1990. These variants were available in coupé, Targa, or cabriolet body styles. New features like power steering and ABS brakes were introduced as standard. The exterior design was refined for improved aerodynamics, with flush-mounted bumpers and fog lamps. An electric rear spoiler automatically adjusted based on speed, enhancing both performance and aesthetics. The interior received upgrades such as standard dual airbags and a new automatic climate control system for improved comfort. Engineering advancements included a redesigned suspension with coil springs replacing torsion bars. While the front suspension adopted MacPherson struts, the rear suspension retained semi-trailing arms, ensuring optimal handling characteristics. In March 1990, Porsche unveiled the 964 Turbo model, succeeding the 930. Due to time constraints, Porsche opted to utilize the existing 3.3-liter engine from the 930 instead of developing a turbocharged version of the 3.6-liter M64 engine. However, they made several minor revisions to enhance the engine's performance, making it smoother, less susceptible to turbo lag, and more potent. These enhancements resulted in a total output of 320 PS (235 kW; 316 hp) at 5,750 rpm. A total of 3,660 units of the 964 Turbo were manufactured. In January 1993, Porsche introduced the 964 Turbo 3.6, equipped with a KKK K27 turbocharged version of the 3.6-liter M64 engine. This model generated 360 PS (355 bhp; 265 kW) at 5,500 rpm and 520 N⋅m (384 lbf⋅ft) of torque at 4,200 rpm. With fewer than 1,500 units produced, it remains one of the rarest and most coveted Porsches ever manufactured, cementing its status as an icon of automotive excellence.
