Porsche 970 Panamera
The Panamera, a front-engine, full-size luxury hatchback accommodating four passengers and weighing nearly 4,000 pounds (1,800 kg), represents a departure from Porsche's historically lightweight, rear-engine sports cars like the 911. While its silhouette and profile evoke the 911, the Panamera offers spacious dimensions and is equipped with advanced luxury features rather than focusing solely on performance. Debuting in 2009, the Panamera lineup initially featured V8-powered models: Panamera S, 4S, and Turbo. These variants were equipped with a 4.8-liter Twin Turbo V8 engine producing 500 PS (368 kW; 493 hp). In 2010, Porsche expanded the lineup with two additional models: the Panamera and Panamera 4, powered by 3.6-liter V6 engines generating 300 PS (221 kW; 296 hp). In February 2011, Porsche introduced the Panamera S Hybrid. It featured the same powertrain found in the Cayenne S Hybrid, including an Audi-sourced supercharged 3.0-liter V6 engine producing 333 PS (245 kW; 328 hp) and an electric motor rated at 47 PS (35 kW; 46 hp). Coupled with the Cayenne's 8-speed Tiptronic S transmission, the Panamera S Hybrid boasted a total output of 380 PS (279 kW; 375 hp) and accelerated from 0–62 mph (100 km/h) in 6.0 seconds. The Panamera Diesel was launched in May 2011, utilizing the Audi 3.0-liter V6 engine also found in the Cayenne Diesel. This engine delivered 250 PS (184 kW; 247 hp), enabling the car to accelerate from 0–62 mph (100 km/h) in 6.8 seconds with a top speed of 150.4 mph (242 km/h). In 2011, Porsche expanded the Panamera lineup with the addition of the Turbo S and GTS variants. The Panamera Turbo S is equipped with larger turbochargers compared to the standard Panamera Turbo's 4.8-liter V8 engine, along with high-pressure fuel injection and aluminum-alloy pistons. The piston rings feature a low-friction coating to enhance performance. With launch control engaged, the Panamera Turbo S accelerates from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 3.3 seconds. Porsche introduced a facelifted version of the Panamera in April 2013, distinguished by updated front and rear bumpers. Technical updates included the introduction of a new 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged Panamera S model and a new E-Hybrid variant. Additionally, a long wheelbase version with an extra 150 mm was offered in selected left-hand drive markets. The Turbo S version of the Panamera followed in 2014, and long wheelbase options were exclusively available on 4S, Turbo, and Turbo S models.
Porsche 971 Panamera
The second-generation Porsche Panamera was unveiled in June 2016, codenamed 971. It is 35 mm (1.4 in) longer, 5 mm (0.2 in) wider, and 5 mm (0.2 in) taller than its predecessor, with a 30 mm (1.2 in) longer wheelbase. The interior features a redesigned dashboard with touch-sensitive surfaces replacing the previous generation's buttons. The second-gen Panamera sheds the criticized hatchback wagon styling of its predecessor, adopting a design more reminiscent of the Porsche 911, with a full-width rear LED light bar and a sharply creased tail and upper bumper. The new engine range includes the Panamera 4S, 4S Diesel, and the flagship Turbo. In March 2017, Porsche introduced the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid for the 2018 model year. This plug-in hybrid combines the 4.0 L V8 engine from the Panamera Turbo with an electric motor, producing a total system power of 680 PS (500 kW; 671 bhp), making it the third most powerful Porsche ever, after the 918 Spyder and 991 GT2RS. In Europe and the United States, a 5-door shooting-brake estate variant called the Sport Turismo was offered alongside the liftback/fastback sedan. The Panamera Sport Turismo debuted in March 2017 at the Geneva Motor Show and featured the same engine range as the 4-door version. In September 2017, Porsche announced the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid Sport Turismo, a 5-door estate version of the flagship Turbo S E-Hybrid, which was previously available only as a 4-door.
