Technical data
The Porsche 993, the fourth generation of the Porsche 911 sports car model, was produced and sold from January 1994 to early 1998. The discontinuation of its production marked the end of air-cooled Porsches, with the 993 being the final air-cooled 911. Considered a significant improvement over its predecessor, the 993 underwent extensive redesign, with Porsche stating that nearly every aspect, including the engine, was entirely redesigned, with only 20% of its components carried over from the prior generation.
A notable enhancement was the introduction of a full alloy multilink rear suspension attached to an alloy subframe, greatly enhancing handling by providing more direct and stable control, while also mitigating oversteer tendencies when lifting the throttle during hard cornering—addressing a characteristic of earlier 911 models.
Available in both coupe, Targa and convertible variants, the 993 was the first generation of the 911 to feature a standard six-speed manual transmission. Additionally, the Carrera, Carrera S, Cabriolet, and Targa (rear-wheel-drive) were offered with a "Tiptronic" four-speed automatic transmission, initially introduced in the 964. Starting from the 1995 model year, Porsche introduced the Tiptronic S, featuring enhanced software and additional steering wheel-mounted controls for smoother and quicker shifts. However, the Carrera 4 was not available with the Tiptronic option.
Further enhancements over the 964 included a redesigned dual-flow exhaust system, larger brakes with drilled discs, and updated power steering.
In the 1996 model year, the Targa version of the 993 debuted, introducing the innovative "greenhouse" system—a retractable glass roof that retracted beneath the rear window, creating a large opening. This design feature was continued in the 996 and 997 Targa models.
In 1995, the 993 Turbo coupe was introduced, featuring a new twin-turbocharged 3.6-liter engine generating a maximum power output of 300 kW (408 PS; 402 hp). Equipped with air-to-air intercoolers, electronic engine management, and redesigned cylinder heads, the 993 Turbo was the first 911 Turbo to feature all-wheel drive. Its distinctive bodywork included widened rear wheel arches, redesigned front and rear bumper moldings, and a fixed "whale tail" rear wing housing the intercoolers.
