968 (1992-1995)

Technical data
The Porsche 968, manufactured by Porsche AG from 1991 to 1995, continued the tradition of its predecessor, the 944, offering both coupé and convertible body styles. The 968 was the last model of the evolution that began twenty years earlier with the Porsche 924. Under its hood, the 968 housed an enhanced version of the 944's inline-four engine, now boasting a displacement of 3.0 liters with a 104 mm bore and an 88 mm stroke. This powerplant churned out an impressive 240 PS (177 kW; 237 hp) at 6,200 rpm and 305 N⋅m (225 lb⋅ft) of torque at 4,100 rpm. Engine modifications included a higher 11.0:1 compression ratio, a lighter crankshaft, crankcase, and pistons, alongside revised intake valves and intake manifold. The 968 also introduced Porsche's innovative VarioCam variable valve timing system, optimized induction and exhaust systems, a dual-mass flywheel, and updated engine management electronics. Notably, the 968's engine ranked as the fourth-largest four-cylinder engine in a production car at that time. A new 6-speed manual transmission replaced the 944's old 5-speed, while Porsche's dual-mode 4-speed Tiptronic automatic became an available option. Both the VarioCam timing system and Tiptronic transmission were recent developments for Porsche, debuting just three years prior on the 1989 Type 964 911. Much of the 968's chassis components were inherited from the 944 S2, sharing similarities with the 944 Turbo (internally numbered 951) due to budget constraints. This included Brembo-sourced four-piston brake calipers, ABS, aluminum semi-trailing arms, aluminum front A-arms, and a steel unibody structure, with Porsche claiming 80% of the car was new. With a manual transmission, the 968 could reach a top speed of 252 km/h (157 mph) and achieve 0–100 km/h (62 mph) acceleration in 6.5 seconds. In the 1993 model year, the 968 received minor updates, such as the addition of a pollen filter for improved air cleanliness in the air conditioning system, as well as the introduction of special packages. These included a seat package with heated driver and front passenger seats, a sound package with additional amplifiers and speakers, and a suspension package with larger 17-inch wheels and an enhanced braking system featuring cross-drilled brake discs.
