Technical data
Porsche 987 Cayman
In 2006, the 987 lineup was expanded to include the new Cayman fastback coupé (project 987c). It shared the same mid-engine platform and many components with the Boxster, such as the front fenders, trunk lid, doors, headlights, taillights, and the forward portion of the interior. Unlike the Boxster, the Cayman featured a hatchback for accessing the luggage areas above and behind the engine cover. The 3.4-liter flat-6 boxer engine (M97.21) in the first-generation Cayman S was derived from the 3.2-liter engine (M96.26) used in the Boxster S. It featured cylinder heads from the 997 S's 3.8-liter engine (M97.01) with the VarioCam Plus inlet valve timing and lift system. The base model was powered by a less powerful but more fuel-efficient 2.7-liter engine (M97.20). These engines were used exclusively in the Cayman until the 2007 model year, when Porsche upgraded the Boxster and Boxster S. In February 2009, a revised version of the Porsche Cayman 987 was introduced, featuring totally new engines (MA1.20/MA1.21). The standard Cayman's engine displacement increased from 2.7 to 2.9 liters, resulting in a power boost of 15 kW (20 hp) to 198 kW (266 hp). The Cayman S gained direct injection, increasing its power by 19 kW (25 hp) to 239 kW (321 hp). The new engines eliminated the Intermediate Shaft, a known weak point in pre-2009 engines. Both the Cayman and Cayman S maintained a 7 kW (9 hp) power advantage over their roadster sibling, the Boxster. The front bumper designs were distinct for each model, with different LED signal lamp arrangements: the Cayman's LEDs were arranged like dice, while the Boxster featured a horizontal row of four LEDs. The Porsche Tiptronic S automatic gearbox was replaced by the 7-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission, and a limited-slip differential became a factory option. The Cayman R, introduced in 2011, represented the pinnacle of the 987.2 generation, featuring reduced weight, increased power, and enhanced aerodynamics and handling.
Porsche 981 Cayman
The Porsche 981 is the internal designation for the third-generation Boxster and second-generation Cayman models. Incorporating the new design language from the 911 (991) and 918, the 981 series features updated engine and transmission specifications. The chassis has been significantly revised, offering 40 percent more torsional rigidity, a front track that is 40 mm (1.6 in) wider, a rear track that is 18 mm (0.7 in) wider, and an extended wheelbase by 60 mm (2.4 in). Additionally, there is a weight reduction of up to 35 kg (77 lb) compared to the previous 987 models. The 981 is the first Cayman to feature electronically assisted steering and an electronic parking brake. The second generation Cayman debuted as a 2014 model in the spring of 2013. It offered a standard trim featuring a 2.7-liter engine producing 202 kW (271 hp), and an S trim equipped with a 3.4-liter engine delivering 239 kW (321 hp). Both variants were offered with a choice between a 6-speed manual gearbox or a dual-clutch 7-speed PDK transmission. In 2015, Porsche introduced the Cayman GT4, a high-performance track-oriented variant. It featured a revised and slightly de-tuned version of the 3.8-liter flat-six engine from the 911 (991) Carrera S. The GT4 model was exclusively available with a 6-speed manual transmission and had a weight of 1,340 kg (2,954 lb).
