The Porsche 356 was Porsche's first production car. Renowned for its lightweight construction and agile handling, this rear-engine, rear-wheel drive masterpiece is available in both hardtop coupé and open configurations. Throughout its production, continuous engineering advancements propelled the 356 to motorsports success and enduring popularity. Production began in 1948 at Gmünd, Austria, with approximately 50 cars handcrafted. In 1950, production shifted to Zuffenhausen, Germany, where the legacy of the 356 continued until April 1965, even after the introduction of the revolutionary model 911 in September 1964. Today, approximately half of the 76,000 original units remain, a testament to the enduring legacy of the Porsche 356. The Porsche 356 underwent four distinct series of development: the original ("pre-A"), succeeded by the 356 A, 356 B, and ultimately the 356 C. To distinguish between these major revisions, enthusiasts typically categorize 356 models into several major groups. Coupés and "cabriolets" (soft-tops) produced until 1955 exhibit identifiable features such as split (1948 to 1952) or bent (centre-creased, 1953 to 1955) windshields. The 356 A, introduced in late 1955, showcased a sleek curved windshield and was notably the first road-going Porsche to offer the Carrera four-cam engine as an option. Following this, the T5 356 B debuted in late 1959, paving the way for the redesigned T6 series 356 B in 1962. The final iteration, the 356 C, retained many features of the late T6 B models, albeit with the significant upgrade of disc brakes replacing the previous drum brakes. An iconic collector's gem is the 356 "Speedster," which made its debut in late 1954 following advice from Max Hoffman. Recognizing the potential for a more affordable, stripped-down open-top variant in the American market, Hoffman's insight proved invaluable. Boasting a sleek, angled windscreen (removable for weekend racing), snug bucket seats, and a simplified folding top, the Speedster swiftly captured hearts, particularly in Southern California, where it enjoyed immense popularity.
