912 E (1975-1976)

Following a six-year hiatus, the 912 made its return to North America for the 1976 model year as the 912E (internal factory designation 923), stepping into the entry-level role left vacant after the discontinuation of the 914. This reintroduction occurred as the new 924, another collaborative effort between Porsche and Volkswagen and the official replacement for the 914, was being finalized and readied for production. Between May 1975 and July 1976, Porsche produced 2,092 units of the 912E (E=Einspritzung), exclusively for the US market. Utilizing the VW "Type 4" engine originally crafted for the 1.7-liter VW 411/412, the 912E featured a Porsche-engineered 2.0-liter engine variant. This version incorporated a longer 71mm stroke crankshaft, updated rod bearings, and new pistons, resulting in an increased cylinder bore to 94mm. The power output stood at 90 SAE horsepower.
