944 (1982-1991)

Technical data

The Porsche 944, produced by Porsche from 1982 to 1991, represented a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive sports car. The 944 offered coupe or cabriolet body styles, featuring either naturally aspirated or turbocharged engines. Debuting in 1982, the 944 swiftly outpaced its predecessor, the 924, with superior speed, handling, and refinement. it excelled in performance and comfort, achieving a remarkable 0–97 km/h (60 mph) acceleration in under 9 seconds. Its balanced weight distribution, with nearly equal front-to-rear proportions, ensured agile handling, courtesy of the rear transaxle. In mid-1985, the 944 underwent significant enhancements, including a refreshed dashboard, door panels, and an embedded radio antenna. The alternator received an upgrade, boosting its capacity from 90 amps to 115 amps. Other notable improvements included an expanded oil sump capacity, reinforced front and rear control arms, a larger fuel tank, optional heated seats, and a premium Porsche HiFi sound system. Additionally, revisions in the transaxle mounting aimed to minimize noise and vibration. For the 1986 model year, Porsche unveiled the 944 Turbo, internally known as the 951, featuring a turbocharged and intercooled engine producing 220 PS (162 kW) (217 hp (162 kW) in the US) at 6,000 rpm. The following year saw the introduction of the 944 S (the "S" representing the abbreviation for "Super) equipped with a high-performance naturally aspirated engine boasting dual-overhead cams and 16 valves, delivering 190 PS (140 kW; 187 hp). In 1988, Porsche unveiled the 944 Turbo S, featuring an upgraded engine (designated as M44/52) delivering a maximum power output of 250 PS (184 kW) at 6,000 rpm and 350 N⋅m (258 lb⋅ft) of torque at 4,000 rpm. In the beginning of 1989, Porsche enhanced the 944's engine by transitioning from the 2.5 L four-cylinder engine to a 2.7 L variant, featuring a bore of 104 mm (4.1 in) and a stroke of 78.9 mm (3.1 in). This upgrade resulted in a rated power output of 165 PS (121 kW), compared to the 160 PS (118 kW) of the 1988 2.5 L version, along with a notable increase in torque. Continuing the evolution, 1989 marked the arrival of the 944 S2, powered by a naturally aspirated 3.0 L engine boasting dual-overhead cams and 16 valves, generating 211 PS (155 kW; 208 hp). With its impressive displacement, it stood as the largest production four-cylinder engine of its time.
